Confederate Currency

Two months after the provincial government of the Confederate States of America was organized on February 4, 1861 confederate currency was released and continued to be printed through 1864.

There were seventy different large size notes issued:

Type 1: $1,000.00

Type 2: $500.00

Type 3: $100.00

Type 4: $50.00

The Type 4 were Montgomery, Alabama issued and are all dated 1861.These notes are very expensive and are highly sought after in today’s marketplace.

The remaining notes, more affordable to collectors consist of five, ten, twenty, fifty, and one hundred dollar notes made from 1861-1864. A five hundred dollar note was issued in 1864. It too is a favorite of modern collectors and reasonably priced. Towards the latter part of the Civil War, Confederate States currency bought very little as it was so inflated. However, the Confederacy kept printing it. Kind of reminds you of the Feds, doesn’t it?

Thankfully, we have the 72 types of notes with a lot of varieties that collectors can chase.
