Medals have been around for hundreds of years, affording today's collector a variety of themes from which to choose. There are so many topics available to those who like medals that it might seem difficult to actually settle on one in particular. However, that's what most people do when they find their niche. 

Medals come in various metals such as bronze, copper, silver, gold and others. Some medals can be quite expensive depending on the metal content, date of manufacture, theme, and so on. They can commemorate world fairs, politicians, buildings, historical events, birth/death of famous individuals, and many other things.
